Kindergarteners and loved ones come together for Mother’s Day Tea

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The four classes of kindergarteners at the SeDoMoCha Elementary School had some special visitors on the afternoon of Friday, May 12 as many of the students had their mothers, and/or some other family members, stop by for the annual Mother’s Day Tea in the school cafeteria.

“This is our sixth annual Mother’s Day Tea for kindergarten,” teacher Erica Tapley said in-between greeting the guests of honor before their children came into the cafeteria. “We have about 140 people total with the students.”

Tapley explained the students worked on art projects for their mothers, grandmothers, aunts or other visitors as well as planting flowers in paper cups to be taken home and transplanted.

Sixteen tables — four per class — were decorated with placemats and plates, cups and silverware for the tea, organized by class with settings for each student and their guests. Tapley said tea, lemonade or water and slices of marble cake would be served to the mothers and youngsters.

She said the Mother’s Day Tea was scheduled for the last 40 minutes of the day. “The kids get to show off their art projects, have cake and chat with the other mothers,” Tapley said.
For the the third consecutive year a half dozen “eighth-grade helpers” assisted by helping decorate and then serving the drinks and dessert by bringing the items to the tables.

“Good afternoon and thank you for coming,” Tapley told the assembled guests via microphone. “It’s always a big hit and we always have a big turnout.”

With the sheet cake nearly gone, the teachers brought out a second cake. “We bought another cake at the last minute and we are so glad we did,” Tapley said to ensure no student or guest went without a slice.
