Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society receives $6,000 grant

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society recently received a $6,050 grant from the Piscataquis County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to scan, microfilm and digitize at least 10 years of The Piscataquis Observer.

The Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society will be working closely with the Thompson Free Library to make these newspapers available to all who have an interest in the history of Piscataquis County. This is the beginning of a project which will hopefully culminate with the entire collection of Observers, from 1838, being available online. The newspapers will be a wonderful resource for all those doing research on families and events in the county.
The Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society was founded in 1963. Its mission is to preserve the history and culture of the towns of Dover and Foxcroft and to share the collection. The society owns two museums – the Blacksmith Shop Museum on Dawes Road and the Observer Building Museum in Union Square.
With offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Maine people. To learn more about the foundation, visit www.mainecf.org.
