Grant will link AT trail to Goodell Brook Waterfalls

    MONSON — The Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC) has received a $5,360 grant from the Recreational Trails Program administered by the Division of Parks and Public Lands of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to develop a walking trail linking the Appalachian Trail near the Appalachian Trailhead in Monson to a viewing area for the Goodell Brook Waterfalls.

    This new trail will allow the Goodell Brook Waterfalls to be included in the new “Waterfalls of Piscataquis County” tour being developed by the Piscataquis Tourism Development Authority (PTDA). The Appalachian Mountain Club will be designing and constructing the trail this summer. 
    Two of Goodell Brook’s falls lie several hundred feet below where the brook flows out of Spectacle Pond and within four to five hundred feet of the Appalachian Trail on property owned by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
    Piscataquis County has more waterfalls than any other county in Maine. Most are relatively hidden from public view. The PTDA has been working to develop public access trails to many of these spectacular falls as part of its work to increase tourism in the county.
    “We expect to roll out our Waterfalls of Piscataquis County tour this summer,” according to Dr. Kenneth B. Woodbury, community development director of PCEDC who has been working on the tour under the leadership of Bob Hamer, past executive director of the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.
