Politics take back seat at Women’s March

To the Editor;
Having attended the Women’s March in Augusta on Jan. 21 in support of the action in Washington, D.C., I return with hope for the future of our state and country. The atmosphere was one of inclusiveness, of the things we value: clean air and water, fair employment and wages, reproductive rights, access to health care, laws that treat all people with respect and dignity, and the desire to pass to our children and grandchildren a bright future. I did not perceive this as a political event. Rather, a chance to join in solidarity with others who strive for a peaceful, healthy existence. Our political loyalties are secondary to the common good.
I am privileged to live in a land where we can gather and speak without fear. My wish is to ensure this legacy for those who follow. To find old friends amidst a crowd of 10,000 reminds me that Maine really is one big community with so many things that connect us to one another.
Let us all work toward a prosperous, peaceful Maine.
