The president of Thomas College is stepping down

WATERVILLE — The president of Thomas College is stepping down.

President Laurie Lachance, who has served in that role since 2012, will retire by June 2025, Thomas College announced Wednesday morning, March 6.

The board of trustees has established a search committee to identify her successor and plans to appoint a new president by June 2025.

Lachance — who is a 1979 graduate of Foxcroft Academy — has been credited with leading Thomas College in Waterville through a period of “significant growth and innovation.” That includes 3.3 percent enrollment growth last fall, according to the college, bucking an overall trend in declining enrollment at four-year institutions both in Maine and nationally.

“It has been my greatest honor and privilege to serve as Thomas College’s president,” Lachance said.

Under her direction, Thomas College has expanded its academic offerings, including new undergraduate and graduate programs, accelerated three-year undergraduate degrees, online degree programs and professional and career development programs.
Lachance also spearheaded campaigns that raised nearly $50 million for the construction of several new facilities, including the Sukeforth Family Sports Center, which opened in 2022.

“Thomas College is such a special place, and we make such a difference in the lives of our students. I gave my notice very early so that the College would have ample time to find the absolute best person for this role,” Lachance said. “I am committed to work closely with the Board and the new president to ensure a smooth transition.”
