Dexter girls roll past Mount View in C North quarterfinal

By Larry Mahoney, Bangor Daily News Staff

BANGOR — The top-seeded Dexter High School girls held eighth seed Mount View of Thorndike to one first-half point in building a 23-1 lead and cruised to a 43-20 Class C North quarterfinal win at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Tuesday night.

Dexter, 18-1 and winner of 14 in a row, will now face No. 4 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln in Thursday’s 8:30 p.m. semifinal. The teams split their regular season games.

Mount View wound up 14-6.

Dexter six-foot-three senior center Mazie Peach blocked nine shots including five in the first half which was an important factor in Mount View’s 0-for-18 shooting performance. In addition to blocking shots, she also altered shots with her presence.

QUARTERFINAL VICTORY — Dexter’s Hannah Dean, goes up for the rebound against Lily Parson of Mt. View in Tuesday evening’s Class C North quarterfinal. The No. 1 Tigers won 43-20.

“The other girls picked up a lot of the slack on offense because I didn’t have a very good scoring night. Defensively, the only thing I have is the block for my size and it’s something I try to do a lot,” said Peach, who finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals to go with her nine blocks.

“She is amazing. She’s the real deal,” said Mount View coach Mike Savage who brought his team to the Cross Insurance Center early to get the jitters out. “I honestly thought we were in a good spot and were settled in but the shots weren’t dropping.

“They’re a heckuva’ team and he’s (Dexter coach Jody Grant)  a heckuva’ coach,” added Savage.

“I was pleased with our enthusiasm early,” said Grant. “We talked for the last few days about putting as much pressure on them as we could without fouling and we did that for the most part. We try to play as a group and be aggressive.

“But that’s been our thing for quite a long time,” added Grant, whose team gave up an average of just 25.5 points per game entering the contest.

Dexter scored the game’s first 14 points and, after an Arianna Bradeen free throw for Mount View’s only point of the first half, the Tigers rattled off the next nine points to close out the half.

Bradeen’s layup 32 seconds into the second half was the Mustangs’ first basket.

Spark plug sophomore guard Lily Parson came off the bench and hit a pair of 3-pointers to pull the Mustangs within 27-12 but that was as close as they got.

Junior guard Abby Corson had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Hannah Dean chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Cally Gudroe had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals and sophomore guard Desiree Adams produced eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

Bradeen’s eight points and 10 rebounds led Mount View. Parson had seven points and three steals, Savannah Lorenz had three points and five rebounds and Mount View’s only senior, Hannah Ferreira, grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Madison Bennett had a basket and sophomore guard Emma Hurd had five rebounds and two steals.
