Big first quarter helps Bucksport top Foxcroft
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Bucksport High School jumped out to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter to help the team earn a 71-52 victory at Foxcroft Academy in a Big East Conference/Class B North game on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 18. The visiting squad broke the game open with a 15-4 run after play was tied at 7-7 in the early minutes.
The Golden Bucks (5-6) earned a season sweep of the Ponies (6-6) with Bucksport winning on its home court 57-44 nine days prior back on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
In the third quarter Bucksport was up by 20 at 47-27 when the Ponies began to chip away at the deficit with an 11-4 run to get to the final seconds of the 8-minute session.
Pony sophomore Lennon McAfee got the spurt started with a 3-pointer and he also had a field goal in the low post for five of the 11 points during this stretch. McAfee ended up leading Foxcroft with 14 points off the bench as he sank the shot from beyond the arc, made three other shots from the floor, and converted five free throws. The Ponies had 20 combined points from three non-starters to go along with 32 from the starting five.
Senior Jadon Richard picked up three points in the 11-4 run as he finished second on the scoring sheet with 11 points.
Pony senior Niska Jasovic also reached double figures with 10 points, including five in the opening quarter for nearly half of his team’s total in the opening eight minutes.
Bucksport senior Caden Blackwood led all players with 25 points. Junior Collin McDougal had 20 of his own as the five Golden Bucks starters accounted for 69 of 71 points. Senior Evan Donnell also reached double figures with his 12-point night.
