Foxcroft boys finish eighth at Class C North X-C championship

Runner and Pace Jarrett earn state meet bids

BELFAST — The Foxcroft Academy boys cross country team just missed qualifying for the next weekend’s state championship at the 2023 Class C North championship on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Troy Howard Middle School, but the Ponies’ top two runners each earned berths as individuals.

Foxcroft finished the day with a score of 214 points, good for eight place among 13 full teams. The Ponies trailed the 196 points for seventh-place Washburn District High School, which grabbed the last spot for the state meet set for next Saturday, Oct. 28 at Troy Howard Middle School.

The top 30 individuals qualify for the Class C championship and a pair of Ponies earned their spots.

Junior Runner Jarrett covered the 5K course in a time of 17 minutes, 42.43 seconds. Jarrett placed seventh overall among a field of 94 entrants. Freshman Pace Jarrett was 28th with his time of 18:47.47 to also earn a spot in the Class C meet.

A year ago the elder Jarrett took part in the Class B championship in Cumberland, and he was 44th among 100 runners in 18:50.07.

Senior Zachary Peirce finished as Foxcroft’s third runner as he came in 58th overall in 21:34.71. Sophomore John Seo was 64th at 22:04.65, and freshman David Kim finished 89th in 26:37.01.

Piscataquis Community High School senior Jorgen Halvorsen ran in the Class C North championship. He placed 56th overall with his time of 21:28.07.

Sumner Memorial High School senior Kaleb Colson won the race in 16:32.54, about 17 seconds ahead of teammate and classmate Ren Salisbury’s  16:59.40.

The two helped Sumner win the Class C North championship with a score of 60 points. Orono High School was second with 84 points, followed by 94 for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, 94 for Bucksport High School, 109 for Houlton High School/Greater Houlton Christian Academy, and 168 for Narraguagus High School of Harrington before Washburn’s 196 points.

A pair of Foxcroft girls ran in the Class C North finale and they had back-to-back finishes. Sophomore Quen Pham placed 47th among 68 runners with her time of 29:40.79. Senior Taylor Pahlavan finished 48th in 30:02.65.

Orono senior Ruth White won the race in 17.08.19, by 13-plus seconds, for her third consecutive regional individual title (there were no regional championships in 2020).

White helped Orono win the team title with 29 points, just ahead of the 35 for Houlton/GHCA. The other teams qualifying for the state meet were third-place George Stevens Academy at 85 points and fourth-place Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln with 108 points.
