Programs on Byzantine art influence

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Icons, layouts, and symbolism … oh my! Lifelong learning at Central Hall Commons to look at Byzantine symbolism, how ancient Eastern Europe affected our graphic design today.

The Iron Curtain has fallen and now we can discover the secrets of Eastern Europe. The Byzantine Empire utilized fantastic art to communicate its messages. The roots of this are still used today in graphic design and even occupy our thoughts of how to place things in artwork for meaning. Even the words we use to describe things come from ideas circulated long ago. We will review some text and art together on Tuesday, July 11, and then come back to discuss it more on July 18. Both events will start at 6 p.m. and go until 8:30 p.m. Chris Maas of the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society will join us.

This is an open discussion and will be facilitated by Michael Saunders. Saunders was a graphic designer for 25 years and is pursuing a future as a history teacher. After years of Western Education, this will be a good way to open our minds to the Eastern perspective. All ages are welcome. The admission fee is $10 for both sessions.

Central Hall Commons nurtures a welcoming, inclusive, healthy, rural community culture by engaging people and organizations in the Maine Highlands region in connecting, celebrating, and learning together. Visit us online at www.centralhallcommons.org.
