Foxcroft boys place third, PCHS girls sixth at PVC championships

BREWER — The Foxcroft Academy boys finished the day with a score of 62 points to place third among a field of 15 point-scoring teams at the 2023 Penobscot Valley Conference Small School Outdoor Track and Championship at the Brewer Community School on Saturday, May 27. The Ponies trailed only the 178 points for Orono High School and 67 for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill. The finish tied last year’s as the highest for the program since the 2016 Pony boys won the 2016 Large School title.

Foxcroft junior Jackson Smith led the team with 24 points across three events. Smith earned the high jump title by clearing the bar at a height of 5 feet, 10 inches, two more then the 5-08 for runner-up Orono sophomore Will Francies.

Smith ran the opening leg of the second place 4×100 relay team as he and seniors Eion Mccloskey, Kyle Jankunas, and Fernando Oliveiva combined for a time of 47.02 seconds. The four Ponies trailed only Orono which set a PVC record — between both the small and large school divisions — with a time of 44.35 seconds, ahead of the 44.59 seconds for Old Town High School in 2014.

Smith also came in third in the long jump at a distance measuring 19-10.

Foxcroft sophomore Runner Jarrett won the 3,200 in a time of 10:56.62. Jarrett bested the 11:09.76 for Bucksport High School junior  William Hileman, who had won the event the previous two years.

Jankunas had fourth-place performances in both hurdle events. He finished fourth at 110 meters in 16.31 seconds and was fourth at 300 meters in 44.06 seconds.

Junior Jack Kinsbury came in fourth in both the high and longs jumps, at a height of 5-06 and a distance of 18-10.

Pony senior Gunnar Berling-Haugh was fourth in the javelin with a top throw of 131-01.

Mccloskey and Olveiva each scored points in the 100-meter finals. Mccloskey was fourth in 11.81 seconds and Olveiva was sixth at 12.04 seconds. Mccloskey added a sixth-place time in the 200 at 24.53 seconds.

Freshman Landon Smith came in fifth in the triple jump at 36-01. Senior David Scheel had a sixth-place throw in the shot put at a distance of 41-02.

The boys from Dexter Regional High School and Greenville High School each had a first-place finish to score 10 points, tying for 10th place in the team standings.

Dexter freshman Damiar Miller claimed top honors in the triple jump with his leap of 39-05. He bested runner-up Sumner Memorial High School of East Sullivan junior Caleb Willett’s 38-03 by 14 inches.

Greenville senior Dominik Murray won the javelin with his throw of 144-04. He bested Washington Academy of East Machias junior Arye Lamb’s 142-04 by 2 feet.

Penquis Valley High School scored two points at the conference finale to finish in 14th place.

Patriot senior Jareth Williams was fifth in the 100-meter finals with his time of 11.92 seconds.

In the girls’ meet, Piscataquis Community High School finished sixth among 13 point-scoring teams with a score of 35 points. The finish ties the 2021 Pirates for the highest for the program since the 2013 PCHS girls came in third.

The Pirate 4×400 relay team won the conference title in a time of 4:36.46. Freshman Jazmin Channon and seniors Kendall Kimball, Samantha Goodwin, and Molly Sipple bested runner-up Foxcroft Academy (4:37.05) by less than .6 seconds.

Sipple had a hand in 24 of her team’s 35 total points. She came in second in the discus with a throw of 88-03 and was fifth in the 100 at 12.97 seconds.

Channon, Kimball, Goodwin, and Sipple combined for a time of 55.62 seconds in the 4×100 relay to come in fourth.

Freshman Sadie Kelley placed fourth in the 1,600 race walk at 10:31.92. Freshman Ava Goulette had a fourth-place shot put throw at 31-05.

Goodwin finished fifth in the javelin standings with her throw of 85-04. Kendall was sixth in the discus at 78 feet.

The Foxcroft Academy girls ended the day with 12 points to tie Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln in 10th place.

The Pony 4×400 relay team came in second as senior Abigail Knapp and sophomores Heidi Clawson, Ingrid Berling, and Alexis Heretakis, and combined for a time of 4:37.05, less than .6 seconds behind the 4:36.46 for PCHS.

Knapp came in fourth in the 400 at 67.69 seconds. She also opened the fifth-place 4×100 relay as she, Heretakis, junior Hilary Howard, and senior Cadence Herrick ran a time of 55.83 seconds together.

Penquis senior Abigail Conlogue won the PVC javelin title with a throw of 104-05. This was more than 9 feet better than second-place distance of 95-03 for Orono junior Dez Seeley.

Conlogue scored all her team’s points as the Patriots ended 12th in the team standings with 10 points.
