Three local players selected for Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic
A pair of players from Foxcroft Academy and another from Dexter Regional High School have been selected for the 2023 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic, scheduled for Saturday, July 15 at Lewiston High School.
The East team roster will include Foxcroft Academy’s Caden Crocker and DJ Scheel and Bryce Connor of Dexter. Pony head coach Danny White will be on the East coaching staff.
LOBSTER BOWL SELECTION — Dexter quarterback Bryce Connor scrambles during the Tiger’s 8-player small school championship victory in Portland during his junior season in 2021. Connor has been selected for July’s Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl in Lewiston.
The Lobster Bowl features the best recently graduated high school senior football players. From each of the state’s six different divisions between the 11- and 8-player games. Participants are nominated by their coaches and then selected by the coaches from each side.
This year’s game kicks off at 4 p.m. on July 15 at Don Roux Field in Lewiston with gates opening at 1 p.m.
In 2022 the West won 40-35 to improve to 21-10 all-time in the series.
SHOESTRING TACKLE — Lisbon’s Colby Levasseur is brought down by Foxcroft Academy shy of the first down marker during a 2021 game in Dover-Foxcroft. Then-junior DJ Scheel (52) is among the players rushing in. Scheel will play at Curry College in Massachusetts after representing the Ponies in the Lobster Bowl.
The Lobster Bowl is sponsored by the Maine Shriners, with 100 percent of the net proceeds from the game benefiting the 22 Shrine Hospitals for Children across the US, Canada and Mexico. The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Game, which operates under the motto, “Strong legs run … so that weak legs may walk,” was created over three decades ago to raise money and to help raise awareness for the expert orthopedic and burn care facilities available to children who desperately need this specialized care — regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
