
Parade honors Monson Bicentennial on Saturday morning
BICENTENNIAL PARADE – Monson celebrated its 200th birthday with a Bicentennial parade on Saturday morning through town. Among the many procession participants was Monson Arts with a collection of large puppets based on the appearance of slate minors in old photographs.
WELL WISHES FROM MASSACHUSETTS – A group of residents from Monson, Massachusetts, along with a municipal police cruiser, came up to Maine to participate in the Monson, Maine Bicentennial parade. The town of about 8,100 residents is located in the central part of the Bay State, east of Springfield.
NEW SWEDEN FOLK DANCERS – The New Sweden Little Folk Dancers traveled to Monson from Aroostook County on Saturday to help celebrate the two region’s mutual heritage. The New Sweden Folk Dancers performed in the parade and several times later in the day.
IT”S LIKE A SAUNA HERE – A Finn bath was among the Monson Bicentennial parade floats proceeding through town on Saturday morning, Aug. 20. The float memorialized Onni “Unk” Vainio and Ronald “Finn” Vainio.
200TH BIRTHDAY CAKE – The Monson Town Office float recognized the 200th birthday of the community.
OLD-FASHIONED PLUMBING – Modern amenities were not needed, but were on display, for the Suomi & Son Plumbing float in Saturday’s parade in Monson.
TRACTOR PULL(EN) – A tractor pulls the Pullen Farm float in the Monson Bicentennial parade.
SWEDISH DESCENDENTS – A float honored Monson’s Swedish descendents, which included two dozen surnames from the Scandinavian nation.
CONSTRUCTION SITE – Killam Builders was on the job in the Monson Bicentennial parade.
DRUMMING PERFORMANCE – Drumming by the Saint John Kineo Tribe was part of the parade as well as at 19 North Guilford Road later in the day on Saturday.
FRENCH CONSTRUCTION – The French Construction was among the parade participants with this float on Saturday in Monson. The Bicentennial parade was part of monthly events taking place to celebrate the community’s birthday in 2022.
COLOR GUARD – The American Legion Post 116 color guard, with other Legion members following behind, marched in the Monson Bicentennial parade near the front of the procession.
