Stearns’ bill providing family leave protections to grandparents becomes law

AUGUSTA – LD 61, “An Act To Include Grandparents under Maine’s Family Medical Leave Laws,” has become law after receiving bipartisan support. Sponsored by Rep. Paul Stearns, R-Guilford, the new law (Chapter 189) now extends Maine Family Medical Leave protections to working grandparents that must take time off to care for a grandchild who has a qualifying severe medical condition or event.

Maine FMLA does not cover routine illness or childcare, nor does it involve compensation while out.  

“For many reasons, we have grandparents all over Mane that are not only a vital part of our workforce, but are also raising grandchildren. These folks tend to have a great work ethic. This change allows working grandparents to take a limited amount of time to provide care to their grandchild without the fear of losing their position,” said Stearns.

The new regulation is scheduled to take effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns.
