Thanks to U.S. Sen. Collins for Scenic Byway support

To the Editor;

As a member of the National Scenic Byway Foundation and Coordinator of the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway, I want to sincerely thank U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine for her steadfast support of legislation that has resulted in the designation of three new national Scenic Byways in Maine. Those designations allow increased national marketing and development of the Byways and add to the great texture creating the diverse fabric of rural America. Residents can develop the Byways to levels they are comfortable with and National designation can provide greater exposure. It also allows greater interpretation and pride to be showcased as part of this great American fabric. The listed Byways were part of a group of 45 designated nationwide because of Collins efforts. These are the first new designations since 2012. They are now part of the pride of the America’s Byway Collection.

Byways are selected based on outstanding unique intrinsic qualities such as, recreation, culture, scenery, history, archaeology and natural qualities. Collins’ effort has made it possible for the following Maine Byways to increase their recognition:

Katahdin Woods & Waters Scenic Byway – received National designation with Recreational Qualities as the lead Intrinsic Quality

St. John Valley Cultural Byway/Fish River Scenic Byway – received National designation with Cultural Qualities as the lead Intrinsic Quality

Bold Coast Scenic Byway – received National designation with historic as the as the Intrinsic Quality

Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway congratulates all of these Byways for the upgrade they have received and Collins in particular for making the opportunity possible!
