Count children in Census data

The U.S. Census Bureau would like to remind parents and families who are staying at home amid the COVID-19 crisis to remember that the 2020 Census is here, and it is important to count their children.

To ensure federal funding for programs that support school-age children and newborns for the next 10 years, parents and guardians need to count all children and babies born on or before April 1, 2020, who are living in their homes when they respond to the 2020 Census. That could mean grandchildren, nieces, and nephews or the children of friends who are living with them.

Unfortunately, young children under age 5 have been historically undercounted in the census. Counting young children is important because population statistics are used by local, state and federal lawmakers to determine how to allocate hundreds of billions of dollars in federal and state funds annually over the next 10 years in communities for programs such as Head Start, nutrition assistance and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, among many others.
