Three Dexter wrestlers qualify for New England championship

NORTH BERWICK — Three Dexter Regional High School wrestlers earned berths in this weekend’s New England championship at Methuen (Massachusetts) High School by finishing in the top three of their respective weight classes at the New England Qualifier on Feb. 29 at Noble High School. The competition brings together the top four performers from the Class A and B championships to see who will represent the Pine Tree State on March 7-8.

The Tigers’ Justin Wing, the 2020 Class B champion at 145 pounds, finished in first place at the New England Qualifier. Wing ended up winning his championship finals match vs. Sam Martel of host Noble via forfeit. Marel is the 2020 Class A champion in the weight class.

Gage Stone, the 160-pound Class B champion, reached the 160-pound finals on Saturday. Class A 160-pound champion Noah Hernandez of Massabesic High School of Waterboro won this match 4-2 in overtime.

Gus Irwin joined his teammates by virtue of his third-place finish. In the 195-pound consolation finals, Irwin pinned John Howard of Class A Mount Blue High School of Farmington at the 5:00-mark.
