Greenville aims to stop Southern Aroostook 3-peat

The Class D South Greenville High School Lakers (19-2) look to snap 21-0 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook’s two-year reign as state champion in a 1 p.m. Saturday game at the Augusta Civic Center, and win the program’s first gold ball since 1985.

It is a rematch of the 2019 final won by Southern Aroostook 55-30. In that game, the Warriors rattled off a 14-0 run in the first quarter and never looked back.

Greenville returns its starting five and added another senior, while Southern Aroostook returned three of its top six players.

Those Warriors’ returnees, junior center Kacy Daggett, senior guard-forward Makaelyn Porter and freshman guard Maddie Russell, were named to the Class D North all-tourney team, and Porter was chosen the Most Valuable Player for the third straight year.

Greenville will benefit from playing a much tougher regular-season schedule and from its familiarity with the Augusta Civic Center, where the Class D South tournament is held.

But the Lakers have had a lot of sickness, and Southern Aroostook’s swarming defense could take a toll on them.

Senior Halle Pelletier, Greenville’s leading scorer and rebounder, will be locked in an intriguing post battle with Daggett.
