Mother’s request finally fulfilled
DOVER-FOXCROFT — About six years ago, our mother was discussing her final wishes with me and my sister Sande Chagir. She said she didn’t want flowers at her funeral but instead donations to be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts in her name.
After all these years, I realized there weren’t any donations made as she requested. My brother-in-law Fred in England gave me the idea to grow my hair and beard, get pledges from folks, set a date to get the haircut and beard shave and then take the money raised and donate it to her cause.
So for eight months the hair and beard grew. On Jan. 31 I went to Sweet Lou’s Barbershop in Dover-Foxcroft and owner Andrew Hutchins cut my hair and shaved my beard. I had members of my family, brother Brian and his wife Cindy and my wife Judith, here for support and to take the before and after pictures. The cost of the haircut and shave was donated as a pledge to be added to other monies collected.
As I collect the pledges and get the final amount I will send a note along with a check to the Shriners Children’s Hospital to be given in the name of our mother, Alexandra Sternal. My sister and I would like to thank all those who took part in raising money for this charitable event. We plan on doing another fundraiser this year so stay tuned.
