Little Organics Learning Center opens its doors

DOVER-FOXCROFT — A new childcare center has opened in Dover Foxcroft, Little Organics Learning Center.

“We decided to start the early learning center when we were unable to find educational childcare for our son who was under the age of 3,” Little Organics owner/director Ashley Cookson said. “We have a few philosophies we would like to follow. First, you only get one education in your life, so you should make it a great one teaching the kids the tools they will need to thrive in the years to come.

LITTLE ORGANICS LEARNING CENTER — A new childcare center has opened in Dover Foxcroft, Little Organics Learning Center.

“The other philosophy is bringing the outdoors in. We want the kids to really experience natural education with what the outside world has to offer. Letting the kids produce some of their very own veggies they will be able to eat as the summer and fall come around. From sewing to harvest the kids will learn agriculture in its smiliest form. They will learn appreciation for local farms as we partner to provide food and soaps within the community. 

Cookson said Little Organics Learning Center will feature a healthy mix of structured learning and free play so the children will be exposed to both traditional education and socialization skills daily. “We are utilizing Maine state Pre-K for Me curriculum for education with slight modifications to better suit a younger group,” she said. Letter recognition, sounds, number recognition and counting up to 10 are some of the core concepts that students will internally throughout our program.

“We find that kids learn best with repetition and learning when they don’t even know it is happening. For example, with our musical instruments we will teach patterns and counting. To the kids, it is just fun to make a lot of noise. Art is the connecting foundation between the strands. By combining traditional mediums like markers and paint with more imaginative (mediums) like sticks and mud, art becomes a common fun learning tool.”

She said morning meetings will incorporate Brain Gym, “A great way to warm the brain up for learning and transition from one core to another. While it appears as silly wiggling to the little ones, it initiates the connections between the right and left side of the brain.”

Little Organics Learning Center strives to combine the need for local childcare, agricultural education and support of farms. After the closing of three community child care facilities, Little Organics was born.
