Rep. Higgins’ bill to examine comprehensive 4-year high school program becomes law

AUGUSTA – Gov. Janet Mills allowed the passage of Rep. Norman Higgins’, I-Dover Foxcroft bill to create a comprehensive career & technical education system to examine a comprehensive 4-year high school career & technical education program.

LD 1036 has been held by the Governor since the end of the last legislative session waiting for the Governor’s action since being unanimously approved by both the house and senate chambers.

The task force will consist of 16 stakeholders to create a first of its kind 4-year career & technical program for students who seek to get an early start on job training right out of eighth grade. The membership of the task force is made up of principals, superintendents, administrators as well as members of the Legislature.

Currently, Maine has 27 CTE centers spread across the state offering programs from wood harvesting and small engine repair to graphic arts and business marketing.

“As a member of the IDEA – Innovation and Economic Development Committee with oversight on Maine’s new 10-year Economic Development Strategy, I expect that the task force recommendations will impact current and future workforce development programs,” Higgins said.

Appointments for the task force shall be made no later than 30 days from Jan. 15. After appointments have been made, the chairs will call together the first meeting.
