Three second-half goals give PCHS win over Penquis
GUILFORD — When the Piscataquis Community High School and Penquis Valley High School boys soccer teams played on Sept. 24 in Milo the final score was a 2-2 tie. The rematch in Guilford on Thursday, Oct. 3 featured a different result as the host Pirates scored all three of the game’s goals in the last 18-plus minutes of the second half to win 3-0.
PCHS (the team now playing in Class D South for 2019 improved to 4-4-1 and 3-1-1 in the last five games) had its fifth corner kick of the second half just over the midway point. Senior Wayne Haley booted the ball into play from the right corner toward the front of the Penquis goal.
Junior Colby Chadwick out leaped the defenders to head the ball into the top of the goal to put his team on the scoreboard at the 18:17-mark.
About 11 minutes later PCHS had an insurance goal. Freshman Gabe Soctomah passed the ball out of the box to junior Kobe Gilbert whose shot through the air landed inside the right post for the 2-0 advantage with 7:15 remaining in regulation.
The Pirates surpassed the team’s goal total in the first game against the Patriots in the final minutes. Gilbert put the ball in play on a corner kick from the right, PCHS had six of the team’s seven such kicks in the second half for a 7-4 overall advantage. Gilbert found Christian Homchuck who headed the ball toward the goal. The official ruled the ball crossed the line for the score before going out for the Pirates’ third and final goal of the afternoon.
PCHS junior Matt Robinson made five saves on eight shots as the team posted its second shutout of the season.
Penquis (the team fell to 3-4-2 losing for only the second time in the last half dozen contests) faced 26 shots and sophomore Grady Atkinson stopped a game-high 15 saves.
