Ponies turn five Mount View miscues into touchdowns
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Foxcroft Academy took full advantage of some mistakes made on offense and special teams by visiting Mount View High School of Thorndike during the Ponies 2019 home opener on the evening of Friday, Sept. 13 at Oakes Field. These changes in possession each led to a Foxcroft touchdown, including a 33-0 lead at the half, as the Ponies won 48-12 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The Mustangs (0-2) opted for a field goal attempt inside Foxcroft territory on the team’s opening possession, but the kick sailed wide left to give the Ponies the football at the team’s own 20-yard line. Eight plays and a pass interference call moved Foxcroft up the Mount View-11 for a fourth-and-1.
Junior quarterback Logan Martin took the snap and ran up the middle to gain the first in the midst of a scrum of players. He kept his legs churning and was able to break a would-be tackle, spinning off and going to the endzone for the touchdown.
On the next Foxcroft possession, Martin found classmate Levi Stedman for an 18-yard touchdown and 12-0 lead. Stedman’s three receptions were good for a team-high 73 yards.
Mount View, playing for the second time in four days with its home opener postponed from the previous Saturday to Monday, ended up fumbling the ball early in the second quarter where Foxcroft junior Noah Lamb made the recovery at the Mustang-42.
On the next play Pony sophomore Austin Seavey took the shotgun snap. He spied Martin running down the left sideline and the signal-caller turned receiver made the catch between two defenders at the Mount View-10. Martin broke away and got into the endzone for the 58-yard touchdown as he ran for, threw for and caught a touchdown pass, all in the opening half.
He would finish 6-of-8 for 120 yards with a touchdown pass, rushed six times for 102 yards and three trips to the endzone and caught the 58-yard touchdown pass — for 280 yards of offense.
Martin further showcased his myriad of skills on the gridiron by making an interception at the Pony-47 and returning the ball all the way to the opposition’s 11.
Foxcroft needed just one play to make Mount View pay as junior Jesse Drury ran the ball in. A Stedman PAT made the score 26-0.
A fumble on the Mustang’s first offensive play fell where Ames could dive on it. He got the pigskin two plays later on a first-and-goal at the 7 and Ames ran in for the touchdown as the Ponies scored touchdowns off three turnovers and the missed field goal for a 33-0 advantage.
Mount View would score early in the third quarter, the team’s first points of the season after being shut out earlier in the week and the first points given up by Foxcroft after six-plus scoreless quarters to open 2019 after a 53-0 win at Washington Academy of East Machias in week one, but the Ponies responded with another touchdown. Martin looked to pass but instead tucked the ball and scrambled 53 yards. An ensuing Stedman PAT gave Foxcroft a 41-6 and set up a running clock.
A three-and-out led to a Mustang punt, but junior Brad Whitten blocked the kick and junior Sam Robinson fell on the ball at the Mount View-20. Two plays later Martin scrambled for another touchdown, a 14-yard run and his third on the ground, fourth scored and fifth overall with the touchdown pass.
Foxcroft will host Class C South team Leavitt Area High School of Turner (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20.
