‘Intelligent Lives’ screening April 27 at Center Theatre

DOVER-FOXCROFT — On Saturday, April 27 at 2 p.m. the Center Theatre is partnering with the Maine Parent Federation and Living Innovations to air a free screening of the film “Intelligent Lives.”

The documentary, from award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib, stars three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities – Micah, Naieer, and Naomie – who challenge “perceptions” of intelligence as they navigate high school, college and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper contextualizes the lives of these central characters through the emotional personal story of his son Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing in the U.S.

The Center Theatre, the Maine Parent Federation and Living Innovations decided to come together and offer a free viewing of the film to the public because to use the film’s message to illustrate to residents across the state the importance of integrating members of the I/DD community into our neighborhoods and why that should be a cultural imperative.

The Dover-Foxcroft region is currently underserved by agencies that provide services to individuals of varying intellectual and developmental abilities. Later this spring, Living Innovations will look to address this glaring need when it opens its 11th Maine office in Dover-Foxcroft.
