PCES recognizes January HEROs

GUILFORD — More than a dozen students in the younger grades at Piscataquis Community Elementary School are now HEROs for their outstanding conduct during the month of January. The HERO honorees were recognized with the presentation of certificates during an elementary-wide morning meeting on Feb. 15.

PCES K-4 pupils earn recognition in honesty, effort, respect or responsibility, and/or others — showing concern and caring for others — and by doing so they get to be HEROs (the honor is an acronym for the criteria). Up to several HERO students are chosen per grade by the teachers.

With the student body gathered in the gymnasium to the start the day, Principal Anita Wright called each HERO honoree down from the bleachers to receive their certificates and be recognized by the audience.

Among the latest HERO recipients are kindergarten: Sadie Bickmore, Auden Herrick, and Samuel Richards; grade 1: Lilah Davis, Nya Hartford, Allison Reed, and Maeve Schnurr; grade 2: Alexis Ames, Emilynn Brown, Anna Folsom, and Kaleb Hammae; grade 3: Breelyn Gaw; and grade 4: Prudence Bridge, Aiden Graves, Haylee Marshall, and Brooklynn Milano.

Elementary families will have the opportunity to “Snuggle Up with a Book” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, Wright explained in her office after the HERO presentation.

“The parents come and the kids come in their PJs, and they come with their blankets and pillows and stuffed animals,” Wright said. “They spread out on the gym floor to read their books.”

She explained “Snuggle Up with a Book,” which was held last year, takes places shortly before Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. Wright said local resident Dyan McCarthy-Clark will read aloud to everyone concluding the evening.
