Sen. Davis’ bill would close unemployment benefits loophole

AUGUSTA – Sen. Paul Davis, R-Sangervlle has submitted LD 784 “An Act To Amend the Laws Governing Eligibility for Unemployment Benefits.” If passed, this legislation would require individuals who are collecting unemployment benefits to accept and attend interviews for jobs they are reasonably fitted for. Failure to attend would result in disqualification from benefits.

“I have heard from employers in my area who regularly schedule interviews with applicants who never show up for the interview,” said Sen. Davis. “Unemployment insurance is an important benefit meant to help folks get by when hard times come, it isn’t meant to be an alternative for working, especially at a time when employers are starved for employees. Simply filling out employment applications to check off a box to qualify for unemployment benefits with no intentions of finding a job isn’t acceptable. I hope this bill will make a meaningful reform to the current system.”

LD 784 has been referred to the Committee on Labor and Housing for consideration. A public hearing has not yet been scheduled.
