Commons Threads — Taking Charge of Your Health

We are constantly bombarded with ways to be healthier, live longer, be stronger, be smarter, have better skin or eyes or memories. These claims can be overwhelming at times. What should we believe? What is important? And how can we filter?

Furthermore, we hear often about the failures of the current medical system: access problems, climbing costs, providers who are too busy, computers getting in the way of the doctor-patient relationship, expense of drugs, and new treatments, the opioid epidemic.

It is no wonder that many people give up on trying and just say “I am going to eat what I want, do what makes me happy, and take my chances.”

As part of the development of a Lifelong Learning curriculum geared specifically to older learners who are interested in exploring new topics, The Commons at Central Hall is offering a six-session course that will help to answer some of these questions. If you are interested in figuring out a way to improve your life and health without giving up or buying in to the “medicalization” of your body, sign up now for “Taking Charge of Your Health” at The Commons at Central Hall in Dover-Foxcroft starting on Monday, Nov. 12, taught by local physician Dr. Lesley Fernow.

Topics will include introduction to self care principles; how to find trusted resources; diets and how they impact your health; managing exercise in spite of pain; complementary and alternative therapies that work; the science behind mindfulness and health; how to connect with your practitioner; supplements-are they worth it? and much more. The cost is $36 for six sessions. All classes will be held from 9:30-11 a.m.

To register contact Tara Smith at 343-3018 or info@CentralHallcommons.org.

Your body will thank you.
