Pony cross country squads run at regional championships

BELFAST — The Foxcroft Academy boys cross country team finished in 10th place at the 2018 Class B North championship on Oct. 20 at Troy Howard Middle School. The Ponies scored 267 points to place 10th among 13 schools, besting the 298 for Washington Academy of East Machias, 330 scored by Winslow High School, and 338 for Medomak Valley High School of Waldoboro.

Senior Nicolas Daneman was the first Foxcroft runner to cross the finish line. Daneman covered the 3.1 miles in a time of 19 minutes, 46.4 seconds to place 45th among 96 entrants. Sophomore Barrett Knapp was close behind in 48th place at 20:01.1.

Sophomore Joseph Keenan came in 56th in 20:16.3. Rounding out the five Foxcroft scorers were junior Jediah Dean, 60th at 20:41.9, and sophomore Corey Merrill, 72nd at 21:44.2.

Pony sophomore Andrew Marston and freshman Hunter Payeur also ran on Saturday afternoon. The two were 89th at 25:26.1 and 93rd at 26:09.7 respectively.

Hermon High School claimed the boys Class B North title by scoring 34 points. Caribou High School came in second at 61 points and Ellsworth was right behind in third place with 63 points.

Washington Academy junior Matyas Nachtiagall won the Class B North race in a time of 17:00.7, more than 12 seconds ahead of Caribou senior Dylan Marrero.

The Foxcroft girls finished 13th of 13 Class B North teams with a score of 327 points.

Sophomore Kaylee Durgin led the Ponies by placing 56th among 92 entrants with a time of 25:02.5. Freshman Olivia McCorrison was next in 61st place at 25:34.4.

Foxcroft junior Leyao Liang came in 67th with her time of 25:58.5. Rounding out the Pony top five were freshmen Makayla Landry and Grace Carlson, with respective finishes and times of 79th at 28:36.8 and 82nd at 29:02.6.

Sophomore Evelyn Marston also ran on Oct. 20 and she came in 84th at 29:25.9.

Class B North girls team honors went to Mount Desert Island High School at 51 points, a single point ahead of runner-up Ellsworth. John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor was third at 115 points.

Ellsworth junior Caitlin MacPherson won the race in 20:09.3, about three seconds before John Bapst sophomore Jaymie Sidaway.

Three boys from Dexter Regional High School ran in the Class C North championship.

Tiger sophomore Michael Gadwah placed 46th in a field of 105, with his time of 20:46.5.

Freshman Nickolas Gallighan was 84th at 23:16.9. Coming in 94th was freshman Clyde Day at 25:39.

Orono High School won the Class C North boys title at 26 points, with George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill coming in second with a score of 43 points, and Calais High School was third at 142 points.

Jonesport-Beals High School senior Evan Merchant won the Class C North championship in 17:30.7, about nine seconds before Narraguagus High School of Harrington sophomore Travis Hunt.
