Foxcroft field hockey falls to Winslow in semifinal play

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Three minutes after tying an Oct. 19 afternoon Class B North semifinal vs. third-seeded Winslow High School 1-1, No. 2 Foxcroft fell behind again at 2-1. The second Black Raider goal would end the afternoon’s scoring as the team won 2-1 to advance to Wednesday evening’s regional championship against top-seeded Gardiner Area High School at Thomas College in Waterville.

The Ponies end 2018 with a record of 14-2, having advanced to the B North semifinal round for the third time in four years and to the semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons between classes B and C. Foxcroft had 13 shutouts in its 16 games during the season, and the two goals against Winslow brought the total goals allowed count to five.

The semifinal berth was the third in four seasons for Foxcroft, and sixth in seven seasons between Class B and Class C.

Winslow (the team improved to 14-2 with its fifth consecutive victory) got on the scoreboard at the 14:35 mark of the first half. Shortly after a penalty corner from the right of the Pony goal, Black Raider junior Silver Clukey had a goal off an an assist by senior Maddie Beckwith.

During the second half Foxcroft had its second penalty corner in a row, with junior Jemyni True putting the ball in play from the left of the Winslow goal. The Ponies had a 4-1 corner edge in the second half and 7-3 overall in the game.

After True hit the ball in, it rolled loose outside the top left of the circle. True got to it and sent a hard shot at the goal. True hit the mark as she tied the game 1-1 with 19:15 left in the second half.

Nearly three minutes later Winslow was awarded its only penalty corner of the second 30-minute session. Beckwith again would have the ball as she passed it to Clukey, positioned in front, who scored the go-ahead goal at 2-1.

Foxcroft would have several more scoring chances to tie the game but the Ponies could not convert. Winslow sophomore keeper Leah Pelotte and Foxcroft junior keeper Abbie Moore both ended play with 12 saves.

The four seniors for Foxcroft are Makenzie Beaudry, Kylie Dow, Mariah Poulin, and Cailin Seavey.
