Greenville boys earn a 2-0 victory at Penquis
MILO — A goal in each half and shutout effort by the defense helped the Greenville High School boys soccer team come away with an 2-0 interclass victory at Penquis Valley High School on Oct. 10 in a late season matchup of squads fighting for playoff positioning in the respective Class D South and Class C North standings.
The Lakers improved to 10-3 with the team’s fourth consecutive victory, holding onto the second seed in Class D South after the game. Greenville also earned a season sweep of the Patriots, having won 6-1 on Sept. 10. Penquis fell to 3-9, but the team remained in 10th place which would qualify the Patriots for the postseason and a preliminary round game on the road.
Greenville had a shots on goal advantage early and at the 17:18-mark of the first half the Lakers were able to get a shot in. Eighth-grader Lukas Miller made a very short pass to junior Chris Caiazzo with the two positioned just outside the box. Caiazzo booted the ball on a centering shot and it went in to put his team on the scoreboard 1-0.

ONE ON ONE — Midway through the opening half of the Oct. 10 game in Milo, Greenville senior Ben Baldwin had a breakaway against Penquis junior keeper Camron Bailey but Bailey made the save. In the second half Baldwin scored the second Laker goal in the team’s 2-0 win.
Near the midway point of the second half Greenville got an insurance goal. The ball bounced loose in the box as senior Ben Baldwin won control. He directed it into the left side of the Penquis goal to make the score 2-0 with 22:28 to go.
Laker junior keeper Jack Morehouse made seven saves on 10 shots to earn the shutout, the fourth of 2018 for Greenville.
At the other end of the field, Penquis junior Camron Bailey helped keep the Patriots in the game with 15 saves on 27 shots. To help spark the offense, Bailey came out the goal and onto the field with 15:27 remaining as freshman Grady Atkinson took Bailey’s place in front of the net. Atkinson stopped all four shots he faced.
The contest served as the “Senior Day” for a half dozen members of the Penquis squad, with each player presenting a rose to their parents/guardians during a pregame ceremony. The seniors are Jake Baker, Hunter Harrison, Jeremy Martin, Tyler Pearl, Derek Pearson, and Dylan Spencer.
