Foxcroft wins at PCHS for ninth shutout in nine games

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Foxcroft Academy field hockey team preserved the squad’s scoreless streak during an interclass contest Sept. 27 at neighboring Piscataquis Community High School as the Pony defense prevented the opposition from getting any shots on goal and also yielded zero penalty corners. At the other end Foxcroft scored three times in the first half and four times in the second to earn a 7-0 win for the 9-0 Class B team’s ninth victory in as many games.

At this point in the season the Ponies are the only team in Classes A, B and C across the state that has not yet been scored upon, a feat setting Foxcroft apart from 76 other programs.

The Ponies earned a season sweep of the Class C Pirates, as Foxcroft won at home in Dover-Foxcroft 8-0 on Sept. 10. PCHS fell to 7-3 with two of the defeats coming at the hands of the Route 15 rival.

Sophomore Maranda Poulin would have the only needed goal nearly four minutes into play, on an assist by classmate Ava Rayfield and shortly after the second penalty corner of the game for Foxcroft. The Ponies had 13 corners in each half for a 26-0 overall advantage to help keep the ball on the PCHS side of the field for most the contest.

Rayfield’s name appeared often on the scoring sheet as she scored twice in the first half and then again early in the second half for three consecutive goals to go along with the assist.

Junior Jemyni True picked up the assist on Rayfield’s first two goals. True also assisted on second half goals for juniors Cassidy Marsh and Megan Fuller to give her four on the afternoon.

Foxcroft junior Abbie Moore manned the Pony goal for much of the game, with freshman Makenzie Sands coming in for eight and a half-plus minutes to close out the second half. At the other end, Pirate sophomore keeper Louise Gerickont turned aside 14 shots.
