September at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Turn the page. As in, move on to new activities, make a fresh start or proceed to the next page in a book. September at the Thompson Free Library is filled with page-turning programs and books that are real page-turners.
September is also Library Card Sign-up Month. If you’ve been meaning to get one, it’s the perfect time to cross it off your to-do list. Starting now, students at SeDoMoCha and Foxcroft Academy, regardless of where they live, can get library cards at the Thompson Free Library for free. Librarian Michelle Fagan will help sign up students at SeDoMoCha on Wednesday, Sept. 5 during the open house.
If you’ve ever wanted to craft your own blank book or journal or create a unique work of art in book form, join us for a book making group from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Sept. 5. It’s a great way to share project ideas, skills and materials with others interested in making one-of-a-kind books by hand. Basic supplies will be provided. This program is for adults.
On Thursday, Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. local author and library raconteur Tom Lyford will host “Memoir 101.” Tom examines this often-overshadowed genre of creative nonfiction through entertaining and thoughtful excerpts. He will also delve into the definition of memoir and share a handout with recommendations and samples.
Tuesday, Sept. 18 marks the beginning of the Maine Humanities Council’s “Let’s Talk About It” series entitled “The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today?” This book discussion group focuses on post-civil war America’s shift towards economic projects of physical expansion and material as well as social and geographic mobility. The first two reads Erik Larson’s “The Devil and the White City” and “The Gilded Age” by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner. This program, facilitated by David Richards, director of the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan, will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month through January. Space is limited so please call or stop by to register.
“Parenting to Keep Kids Safe” is an important four-part series that begins Tuesday, Sept. 25 and is held every two weeks from 5-7 p.m. through Nov. 6. Parents and adults who care for kids can learn valuable information including promoting safe and respectful behaviors and healthy relationships while recognizing questionable behavior in adults. Space is limited so contact library director Greta Schroeder at 564-3350 to reserve a spot (ask about onsite childcare if needed).
The public is invited to join the Charlotte White Center’s art classes at the library (featuring step-by-step instructions and mixed media) held every Thursday from 11 a.m.to noon downstairs in the community meeting room.
Those cute hedgehogs are back! Make your own paper hedgehog with Michelle on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. — open to all ages.
