Wayside Theatre to host Castlebay July 28

DEXTER — Castlebay plays at the Wayside Theatre at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. Since 1986, Castlebay has been weaving together Maine’s nautical and British Isles legacies transporting their audience through time and across the Atlantic. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee’s traditional and original songs are supported with Celtic harp, 12-string guitar, fiddle and woodwinds.

Lane has been playing the Celtic harp since 1989. Self-taught, she rapidly became a skilled and exciting player, winning many international competitions. Lane also wrote the book and score for “The Grand Design,” a play based on a 1740 shipwreck of Scot-Irish immigrants on Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. She is currently transcribing Maine songs from field recordings that are in the Flanders Collection at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Gosbee, singer, songwriter and storyteller, plays classic and 12-string guitar, violin, viola and Irish flute. He learned many traditional songs from his family, who worked as lumbermen in the forests of New Brunswick and Maine and settled in Harmony. Gosbee engineered many of Castlebay’s recordings and built Lane’s harps and many other instruments.

Castlebay has toured the eastern U.S. and Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland and Kosovo performing at festivals, museums, schools and folk clubs. To date, they have released over 36 recordings, many of which received international airplay. These are available in over 250 music and books stores throughout the northeast.
