PCSWCD traveling around the region to present on watersheds

Join us at the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District at one of several public libraries throughout Piscataquis County for a free presentation about watersheds. Using a large scale model, everyone will get to participate in “making rain” over a watershed and watch what happens in the course of the journey. There will be activities for all ages to help better understand what a watershed is.

You may have some understanding about the water cycle but have you ever looked through your back window and thought about the stream in your neighborhood or the pond at your camp? Where did that water start its journey? What does that water encounter along the way? Do these things have any effect on water as it flows? Are these things going to go with the flow? And when everything gets to the end of that journey, does it remain in place?

Throughout a water droplet’s journey, it flows through a landscape that is rich in diverse land uses from lush forests and deserts but also through farmland, towns, cities and manufacturing plants. Each of these environments has an impact on the water’s health. In natural environments like forests, trees dropping leaves, logs and other organic debris falls into the water and provide nutrients to feed other organisms as well as hiding places for creatures to live in. Other environments like farms, businesses and towns also impact watersheds, but how?

Come to any of the presentations at the following libraries to learn more about watersheds and their purpose:

July 10 11 a.m., Shaw Public Library, 9 Lily Bay Road, Greenville;

July 12 3 p.m., Sangerville Public Library, 1 Town Hall;

Aug. 7 2 p.m., Brownville Free Public Library, 27 Church Street;

Aug. 9 2 p.m., Thompson Free Library, 186 East Main Street, Dover Foxcroft;

Aug. 10 3 p.m., Milo Free Public Library, 4 Pleasant Street; and

to be announced Monson Public Library, 35 Greenville Road, Suite 10.
