Wayside Grange to host double concert on Saturday evening

DEXTER — Two Americana bands for the price of one at 7 p.m. at the Wayside Theatre on Saturday, June 30. The bands are Timberdoodle and then Three Yankees and One Hillbilly.

Timberdoodle is an old-time string band, consisting of Toby Hall (banjo), Mike Kagan (mountain dulcimer), Sam Brown (guitar) and Stuart Moore (fiddle). Timberdoodle enjoys playing a variety of foot-stomping music ranging from old time fiddle tunes, traditional folk tunes, jigs and reels.

Known as the American woodcock, this Timberdoodle plays the ballads, fiddle tunes, jigs and reels we inherited from other countries that are the roots of our North American folk music.

Tunes with clever lyrics and foot stompers with a contagious beat are the sounds one might have heard on a front porch during a summer night long ago. Amid the banter between tunes you might even hear a joke or a funny story. It just adds to that hometown feeling.

Three Yankees and a Hillbilly (3Y+H) plays traditional bluegrass, classic country, rural swing, blues, folk and string-band music. This American mountain music ranges from soft love ballads to blazing instrumentals.

Martha Hills and Don DePoy, and Joe and Nellie Kennedy possess an extensive Americana song repertoire with extraordinary instrumentalist skills. Sprinkled with often amusing stage banter, 3Y+H’s depth of versatile singing, song choices, and instrument groupings allow innumerable delightful combinations.

Their instrument quiver includes banjo, guitar, harmonica, bass fiddle, Appalachian dulcimer, mandolin, dobro and autoharp.

Three Yankees and a Hillbilly loves life and offers light-hearted clarity about the importance of simple enjoyment.

Doors open at 6:30, with no reservations. Home baked goodies and pretty good coffee are sold at intermission. The evening includes door prizes and a 50/50. For more information, please contact 277-3733 or 270-1166 or on Facebook see “Wayside Grange.” The facility is located at 851 North Dexter Road (Route 23).
