June events at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — June marks a new chapter for Dover-Foxcroft’s 120-year-old Thompson Free Library. Director Helen Fogler retired after 21 years and has passed the torch to Orono native Greta Schroeder, who has worked in various libraries, most recently, McArthur in Biddeford and has a MS degree in Library and Information Science.
Before handing over the reins, Helen gave Greta a two-week crash course in all things TFL, sharing her knowledge and experience. “I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from Helen,” Greta said. “Everyone at the library has been so welcoming and it’s been a pleasure to meet members of the community. Please stop in and say hello.”
Despite the transition, it’s full steam ahead with our busy summer schedule. All ages can get involved, have fun, and learn something new, like making fermented foods — which are all the rage right now. They’re healthy, easy to make, and inexpensive. Join us at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 as Mary Margaret Ripley (of Ripley Organic Farm) hosts Fermented Veggies 101. Bring your own cutting board, knife, large mixing bowl, and quart jar to slice, salt, and stomp your way to tasty creations like kimchi, sauerkraut, and more. Or, just watch and learn (there will be a handout).
The Oral History in Your Community Workshop will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 at Central Hall’s Senior Commons (the library is partnering with them). Keith Ludden and Molly Graham from Oral History & Folk Life Research, Inc. will teach people how to interview and be interviewed to help preserve our local stories and voices.
Time to dig out your change and break down those bills for the latest Ten-Cent Book Sale on Thursday, June 21 from 4-7 p.m., Friday, June 22 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (walk off those whoopie pies!).
Please note: summer reading signups will be held at the library June 26-30 only. This six-week independent reading program is for ages 0-18. At the end, participants will receive a new book. It’s a great way to set the stage for a lifetime of reading.
Our summer children’s programs kick off on at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 with Chewonki’s Mammals of Maine. The six-week series (each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.) is designed for pre-K through fourth grade. Students will receive a bookmark at school with a listing of all the dates and events. Bookmarks are also available at the library.
Now this is music to our ears: the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s Meet the Music Maker’s String Quartet will be performing at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 28. We continue the creative vibe with Jane Blay’s traditional art and artistic photography on display this month. Jane is the art teacher at Foxcroft Academy.
