Sebec group needs support

SEBEC — Members of Sebec Village Associates, or the Sebec Reading Room as they are informally called, met on Friday, May 11 to discuss the upcoming year. Members present lamented a bit on the list of repairs that are needed to maintain the quaint community building where they hold activities all year for the lakeside village and surrounding townspeople. Even though many repairs have been done in the past years, the list of building repairs is still long.

Over the past 10 years, the hardworking group has raised money to replace the roof of the building, added siding to the building, repaired and sanded the floor, upgraded the kitchen floor, upgraded the bathroom, added a ramp to the front porch and repaired the porch, painted the porch and more. Projects that must be done soon to avoid any damage include re-roofing the barbeque pit, upgrading the kitchen, and fixing the side entryway by adding a covered entrance and drainage to the north side of the building. These repairs will cost more than is available in money raised over the past year.

The group talked about ways to raise money and will add a fundraiser here and there over the year to hopefully gather much needed funds. The group has also started a GoFundMe page and is asking for citizens of Sebec currently and in the past to consider donating funds, and any amount is appreciated. The group also approved a calendar of events for the year which will include a large Fourth of July celebration that will include the annual chicken barbecue, parade, canoe and road races, bake sale, multi prize table and more. Other events will include monthly dinners, a silent auction, the fall apple festival and more.
