D-F American Legion’s inaugural Warrior Race & Fun Run May 26

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Two days before Memorial Day and the annual mid-morning parade through downtown Dover-Foxcroft, American Legion Post 29 will honor the service and sacrifice of veterans with the inaugural five kilometer (3.1 miles) Warrior Race & Fun Run at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 26.

“We have been trying to increase awareness, not just for veterans but in the community so this is one of the ways we are building up recruitment and helping out veterans,” Adrienne Clarke of American Legion Post 29 said. “I hope we can appeal to a lot of differing interests as we grow,” she added, mentioning having more frequent additions to the Post Facebook page as another endeavor to reach out to the community.

“All proceeds will benefit four agencies,” she said about the Warrior Race & Fun Run. The race will provide funding for the JD Foundation, Wilderness Walk for Warriors, House in the Woods and Back in the Maine Stream. Each organization provides services to veterans and/or their family members.

“We are planning to have a complementary barbecue for all participants as well as volunteers,” Clarke said. “There will be trophies for the top male and female runners as well as coins and T-shirts.”

She explained the commemorative coins will be engraved with the American Legion emblem and “Warrior Race & Fun Run” along with the date of the 2018 race.

“We wanted to start and end here,” Clarke said, with the starting and finishing lines to be located at the Post home at 121 Park Street. She plans for the course have runners heading up Park Street to the Dawes Road and then going onto the Anderson Road before reaching a turnaround with participants coming back along the same route.

“We are looking for sponsors and people to volunteer,” Clarke said. “We still need timers, those that want to hand out coins, all kinds of things.”

“It’s something new we have never done before,” Clarke said. “Eventually I would like to see it morph, we could have people run around the lake. It should be really exciting, I like being around races.”
