Dover-Foxcroft will recognize Arbor Week May 21-25
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The town of Dover-Foxcroft will again observe Arbor Week in 2018 as the week will be from May 21-25, after the selectmen signed a proclamation during a March 26 meeting. The state recognizes Arbor Week during the third week of May.
No plans were announced but in past years ceremonial trees have been planted across the community during Arbor Week. Town officials have worked with local organizations such as the Foxcroft Academy Key Club, SeDoMoCha Elementary School and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC)/Miosac Club to plant trees at community parks and on school campuses. Dover-Foxcroft is recognized with Tree City USA status by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
In other business, the selectmen authorized the S.E. MacMillan Company, Inc. of Bangor to use the town’s East Main Street parking lot as a staging area for a large culvert replacement project at the nearby Bear Hill bridge for the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT).
“We know MDOT’s got the project on the Bangor Road just below Fox Brook (Variety),” Town Manager Jack Clukey said. He said S.E. MacMillan is willing to make improvements to the parking lot in exchange for permission to use the space. The contractor would demolish the existing structure at the parking lot, haul the demolition debris to the landfill in Old Town, pay the tipping fee and fill in the cellar hole.
Demolition would be done in late June and the parcel would be used by S.E. MacMillan from then through October.
“We are really down to the end of delivering waste to (the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company in Orrington), at the end of the month,” Clukey said in his report.
Starting on April 1 the town’s municipal solid waste will be delivered to the Crossroads Landfill in Norridgewock as part of the bridge capacity arrangement the Municipal Review Committee has while construction of the new Fiberight facility in Hampden is completed. Clukey said Fiberight could be in operation in May.
“It’s a great event, just to see so many kinds of people and families,” Select Vice Chair Cindy Freeman Cyr said about the annual Maple Sunday Breakfast held the morning before at Foxcroft Academy. Nearly 900 plates were served at the meal hat has been been held for more than two decades. Proceeds benefit the annual Dover-Foxcroft Shiretown Homecoming in August.
