Greenville wins 13th consecutive game with victory at Penquis
MILO — Since dropping the first two games of the season — both dates happened to be away contests — the Greenville High School boys basketball team has been on a roll with 12 straight wins. The Lakers increased the streak to a lucky 13 with a week left in the regular season after defeating Penquis Valley High School on the road 63-30 in an interclass matchup on Jan. 31.
Greenville — which returned all five starters from the 2017 Class D South championship squad — jumped out to a 12-0 lead after the first quarter in Milo and 30-8 advantage after the opening half to earn a season sweep of the Class C North Patriots. On Dec. 28 Greenville won at home vs. Penquis 41-19.
Senior Nick Foley picked up a game-high 27 points, nearly double the total of anyone else. Foley converted five times from beyond the 3-point line and he also hit three jump shots, two coming from just inside the arc.
Foley scored five points in the opening quarter and classmate Devin Boone had five of the other dozen points for the Lakers in first eight minutes. Boone put a pair of offensive rebounds back up for two on each shot in quarter No. 1 as he would finish the night with 14 points to his name.
In the second quarter Foley scored nine of Greenville’s 16 points — Boone had three and junior Nick Caiazzo scored four — as the team built its 30-8 advantage before the teams went into the locker rooms.
Penquis sophomore Camron Bailey scored all eight of his team’s points in the opening half during the second quarter, on a 3-pointer, a jumper and a shot in the post and one free throw. Bailey ended up leading the Patriots with nine points.
Greenville maintained its 20-plus point lead but both teams would score 14 points in the third quarter with the scoring spread out among five players for each squad. Boone picked up six points for the Lakers and Patriots freshman Zak Mills scored five of his eight points during the third quarter.
Foley picked up his final 10 points in the fourth quarter, on two 3-pointers, taking a steal the other way for a layup and converting a pair of foul shots to finish at 27 or three less than Penquis would score as a team.
The defeat dropped the Patriots to 0-15 on the season
