Clark, Cyr finalists for Maine’s top sports media honor

A quartet of northern Maine sportswriters and broadcasters, including two with ties to the Bangor Daily News who both have contributed to the Piscataquis Observer over the years, have been recognized as finalists for the Maine sportswriter and sportscaster of the year awards given by the National Sports Media Association (NSMA).

Dover-Foxcroft resident Ernie Clark of the Bangor Daily News is joined by Houlton Pioneer Times reporter Joseph Cyr as a finalist for the state’s top sportswriter for 2017. Among the broadcasters, Rene Cloukey, the sports director at WAGM-TV in Presque Isle, and Rich Kimball of Black Bear Sports Properties/Learfield in Orono and the host of the “Downtown with Rich Kimball” radio show, are the finalists.

The journalists received nominations by NSMA members to make the top two in their respective categories and reach the final ballot. That vote will take place among state members during December. The winners will be announced in January.

State winners will be recognized as part of the 59th annual NSMA Awards Weekend, which will be held June 23-25 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
