Quintet of local grads help Husson field hockey team make history in 2017

BANGOR — Five graduates of Dexter Regional High School and Foxcroft Academy were members of the 2017 Husson University field hockey team, helping the Eagles win the first NCAA tournament game in program history and also setting the school record for victories in a season.

The Eagles defeated the University of Maine-Farmington 3-2 to win the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship for the seventh time in the history of the program. The NAC crown helped give Husson a berth in the NCAA Div. III tourney.

The team traveled to Wellesley, Mass. to face then fifth-ranked Babson College in a first round matchup. Husson came away with a 1-0 win, The victory was the Eagles’ first in NCAA play and first against a ranked opponent. The win was also the 13th of 2017 for Husson, setting the program mark for victories in a season.

In the second round Husson faced the then 14th-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.) at Middlebury, Vt. The Eagles lost 2-1 to finish the year with a record of 13-6.

Senior Amber Anderson, of Dover-Foxcroft and a graduate of Foxcroft Academy, served as one of three Husson field hockey captains. Playing in the midfield, Anderson started all 19 games and she picked up an assist along the way. Anderson was chosen for the NAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Anderson is the daughter of Scott and Sheva Anderson, and she is a nursing major.

Junior Abigail Simmons, of Charleston and a graduate of Foxcroft, Academy, played in all 19 games as a defender and she made 14 starts.

Simmons is the daughter of John and Collette Simmons, and she is a nursing major.

Junior Morgan, Gray, of Dexter and a graduate of Dexter Regional High School, appeared in 12 games with four starts on defense.

Gray is the daughter of Dale and Danielle Gray, and she is a nursing major while minoring in behavioral science.

Sophomore Kolby Kain, of Dexter and a Dexter Regional High School graduate, played in all 19 games and she made seven starts. The Husson forward scored a pair of goals, with one a game-winner.

Kain is the daughter of Donald and Anita Kain, and she is majoring in elementary education.

Freshman forward Alli Bourget, of Dover-Foxcroft and a graduate of Foxcroft Academy, played in 18 games with 12 starts. Bourget scored five goals — with two scores being game-winners — and she assisted on three others.

Bourget is the daughter of Lisa Boone and Alfred Bourget, and she is a health services major.
