SeDoMoCha School flys brand new flag for Veterans Day

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Before walking into the building every school day, SeDoMoCha School students, staff, parents and visitors pass by the flagpole where the American and state flags are flown. Blowing in the breeze and being on display in various temperatures wears the flag. In recognition of Veterans Day school officials invited American Legion Post 29 of Dover-Foxcroft to conduct a formal exchange of the old flag for a new flag during the mid-morning of Nov. 9 — the last day of school before the holiday.

Each elementary classroom and middle school homeroom had a representative for the flag ceremony and the approximate three dozen students formed a semicircle by the flagpole as members of the American Legion, the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club, RSU 68 administrators and some middle school classes watching through windows all looked on.

“This morning we are going to show respect to the flag that’s been flying on your school grounds,” American Legion Post 29 Commander Sanford Robinson said. He then explained that when an American flag becomes worn it should be replaced.

Robinson said worn out flags need to be properly disposed off, and the SeDoMoCha School flag will be burned during the Post’s annual ceremony in June. He invited the students to all attend the ceremony held around Flag Day.

“It’s the only time the flag is burned,” Robinson said, explaining the color guard and others there are “all from Post 29 American Legion Dover-Foxcroft.” He said the old flag will be hoisted to full staff one last time, then lowered and properly folded and presented by the color guard to him. The new flag would then be unfolded and hoisted for a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Once the new flag was in place and property recognized, Robinson concluded the ceremony by telling the students, “I want to thank you for your patriotism and loyalty to the American flag.”
