Foxcroft boys score four times in second half to top Caribou
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Despite having not played a game in nine days, the Foxcroft Academy boys showed no ill effects from the layoff as the team broke open a 2-1 contest with four goals in the second half to defeat Caribou High School 6-2 in a Class B North matchup on Sept. 27. With the victory the Ponies earned the team’s fourth consecutive win to move to 5-2 on the season.
Early in the second half Foxcroft junior Yuming “David” Chen kicked a shot that Caribou junior keeper Noah Hixon was able to stop by lunging to his right and extending his arms up to knock the ball away. Unfortunately for the Vikings the rebound bounced directly to Pony senior Jacob Olson. Olson was able to direct the ball in past the prone netminder to make the game 3-1 and start the scoring binge in the second half.
Just over a minute later Foxcroft again had the ball at the Caribou end of the field as junior Cody Tetlow passed to senior Jae Park. Park’s shot from the left found the mark to put the Ponies on top 4-1 nearly seven minutes into the second half and just over a minute after the Olson goal.
The Vikings got a goal back as junior Alex Ezzy, who scored twice for his team, at the 24:12-mark to make the scoreboard 4-2 and put the deficit back at two goals.
Sophomore Simison Wanimbo’s insurance goal made the game 5-2 with 11:58 to play. Olson assisted on the play for the first of his two assists as he had a role in half of the half dozen Foxcroft goals.
Just over four minutes later senior Austin Bickmore scored the fourth Pony goal of the second half, sixth overall — matching a 2017-high — and his second of the afternoon as Bickmore opened the scoring on an unassisted shot from the far right corner of the box just over 10 minutes after the opening kick.
Freshman Lucas Ames made 10 saves on 14 shots for Foxcroft.
Early in the second half Ezzy was awarded a penalty kick to set up a one on one play with Ames. Ezzy kicked the ball low and to Ames’ left and the Pony keeper correctly anticipated the direction as he dove and got his body in front of the ball to prevent it from crossing the line and keeping the score 4-1 at that point.
Hixon stopped 11 of that 23 shots that came his way.
The loss dropped Caribou to 3-5 as the Vikings lost for the fifth time in six games.
