Wendell Berry film showing at the Center Theatre Sept. 28

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Center Theatre and the Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition are presenting a very special cinematic portrait of farmer and writer Wendell Berry at the Center Theatre. The film “Look & See” will be screened at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28.

In 1965, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County in Kentucky, where he bought a small farm house and began a life of farming, writing and teaching. This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half century later Henry County, like many rural communities across America, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation, the agrarian virtues of simplicity, land stewardship, sustainable farming, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor, chemical fertilizers, soil erosion and debt — all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window, Berry has watched this struggle unfold, becoming one of its most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life.

Tickets can be reserved online at CenterTheatre.org, by calling the theatre at 564-8943 or stopping by 20 East Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft. The Center Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing affordable entertainment, arts, and education to the community. Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) is part of the worldwide Transition movement of local people getting together to reorganize their own communities to tackle the three problems of economic instability, climate change, and the end of low-cost oil.
