PCHS falls at home to Central

GUILFORD — Three goals coming in nearly eight minutes early in the second half helped propel Central High School of East Corinth to a 5-0 Class C North field hockey victory over Piscataquis Community High School on Sept. 13. The visiting Red Devils (1-3) picked up the team’s first victory of 2017 and the team dropped the Pirates to 0-5.

Following a penalty corner from the right with just under 11 minutes to go in the opening half, PCHS freshman Louis Gerickont stopped a Central shot for one of her game-high seven saves on 16 shots. With the ball loose by the left side of the goal Red Devil senior Allie Elliot poked it in to put her team on the scoreboard at the 10:43-mark.

Another penalty corner, with the ball put in play from the right of the Pirate goal, during the opening minutes of the second half lead to the second Central goal as senior Ottilie McPhail gave the team a 2-0 advantage. The Red Devils would follow with two more goals in a span of 1:08 to take a 4-0 lead, and the double team’s goal total on the season as Central recorded two goals in its previous three contests.

McPhail scored goal No. 4 for her team and she finished with a hat trick by putting the ball in one more time on a breakaway with eight seconds to go to give her three goals in a span of approximately 26 minutes of game time.

The Central defense posted its first shutout of 2017 and kept PCHS off the scoreboard for the fourth time in five times. Red Devil senior keeper Lexie Taylor made five saves on 13 shot attempts.

Central finished with a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners, including a 7-2 edge in the first half.

The two teams are scheduled to play in East Corinth at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.
