Commissioners renew agreement for UT waste disposal in Greenville

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Following discussions at several meetings, during a July 25 session the Piscataquis County Commissioners signed a renewal agreement with the town of Greenville to enable residents of Moosehead Junction, Harfords Point, and Big Moose townships to use the Greenville solid waste transfer station for another two years.

“We discussed this at our last meeting July 11 in Greenville,” County Manager Tom Lizotte said. “I will send it up to Greenville so their board can sign it.”

He said the contract is for approximately $61,500 for each of the next two fiscal years, from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2019. The new agreement has an increase of a little more than $5,000 for both years.

In 2015 the county and Greenville entered into the agreement for the first time. Residents of the unorganized territories — those who do not pay to have their trash and recyclables hauled away — had been traveling through Greenville to the county facility in Lily Bay on the opposite side of Moosehead Lake.

“It’s not costing us more for these people to use the Greenville transfer station,” Commissioners Chair James White said, in comparison to potential additional expenses at the county facility. He also said having the shorter distance makes disposing of waste and dropping off recycling more convenient for residents of the three western side of the lake townships.

During the commissioners’ Tuesday morning meeting, much of the county complex parking lot was closed for hot crack fill repairs to help prevent further deterioration. In late June the work was awarded to Harvey Paving and Seal Coating of Bangor for $4,500, with the funds coming from a maintenance account.
