New memorial scholarship will recognize PCHS student/athletes

GUILFORD — Lawrence G. Holmquist of Monson has bequeathed $20,000 to Piscataquis Community High School to establish two $1,000 student/athlete scholarships to be awarded annually.

Holmquist taught seventh-grade math for 30 years in Auburn before retiring to his hometown of Monson. He worked as an educational support person and athletic director at PCHS prior to his death. A graduate of Monson Academy and the University of Maine at Farmington, he participated in sports in high school and college. A four-time National League Softball umpire, Holmquist also refereed basketball. He financially contributed to many school activities and provided funds for individuals to attend summer basketball camp.

“Larry was a proponent of higher education and was sensitive to the costs associated with obtaining a degree in a field of study,” said Susan C. Grondin of Lewiston, a long-time friend. “He desired to support students financially which resulted in the establishment of the Lawrence G. Holmquist Memorial Scholarships. Due to his interests in sports, each recipient must be a student athlete in good academic standing. PCHS principal, Mr. (John) Keane and members of the guidance department have been in contact with me to discuss the scholarships which will be awarded this year.”

“Larry’s generosity will provide scholarships for many years,” Grondin added.

Application forms are available in the PCHS guidance department.
