April events at Thompson Free Library
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Are you so over staring at dirty snow that you could scream? And when it finally melts, then the rain comes. Well, don’t let lingering April showers (or mud) dampen your enthusiasm and desire to get out and about. The Thompson Free Library is the perfect place to channel all that restless energy.
On Thursday, April 13 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. our Brown Bag Lunch Series features Trisha Smith of University of Maine Cooperative Extension who will lead a hands-on workshop making plantable pots from newspaper, starting seeds and sharing her gardening knowledge. It’s the perfect way to jumpstart your summer veggies and celebrate Earth Day.
The Community Giving Project is slated from 4-5 p.m. on Thursday, April 20. Librarian Michelle Dyer-Fagan is planning an outdoor clean-up project, weather permitting. The location will be announced later so check our Facebook page for more details. This ongoing community program is open to the public.
Nerf Night is a fun way for kids (grades 5-10) to let loose on their last night of spring vacation. This chaperoned Nerf war will be held Friday, April 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the library (after hours). Participants must bring their own Nerf guns and pellets. Dyer-Fagan expects to wear her referee hat as the playful battles wage.
On the book front, since April is Road Map Month, the theme is travel. Whether you want to explore parts unknown like Anthony Bourdain or just escape to the coast, these books will tap into that wanderlust — inspire and motivate you to plan your next journey. Or, happily experience the author’s (or character’s) adventures from the comfort of your own home.
Finally, the library’s juvenile section has gotten a spring makeover. It’s gone from a mostly alphabetical system to a mostly genre one, more in line with how a bookstore is set-up. Look for specific genre labels (such as fantasy, mystery, etc.) above the shelves. Also, note that each book has a corresponding genre label on it.
Now more than ever, your local library is a vital resource when it comes to learning, community involvement, personal development and family entertainment.
