DIDGERIDOOS — The 60-plus grade 1 students at the SeDoMoCha Elementary School in Dover-Foxcroft recently started a unit on sound. As an introductory lesson Fred Maddocks, a student teacher in Karen Goodman’s classroom, taught the first-graders about the didgeridoo. The didgeridoo is an Aboriginal wind instrument from Australia, played by vibrating the lips to produce the sound while using a special breathing technique called circular breathing. This method requires breathing in through the nose while expelling stored air out of the mouth, using the tongue and cheeks. The students were able to make their own didgeridoo and enjoyed learning and practicing.
