Women’s club news and notes

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC)/Miosac Club met Feb. 8. President Anne Cress welcomed members and Brenda Quiet led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Diane Leighton took roll with 12 members responding, followed by a reading of the minutes from the last meeting.
Treasurer Pat Jones gave her report and, in the absence of the corresponding secretary, Jones read a thank you from the Piscataquis Regional YMCA. Minnie McCormick reported she was pleased with the last report to the Piscataquis Observer.
Suzanne Raymond gave the advisory report for the Feb. 21 meeting with McCormick and Jones set to serve as hostesses. Cress noted the February birthdays and urged members to send cards — five members have birthdays in February.
Under unfinished business the amended by-laws were read and all were approved. Ice out tickets were passed out and the contest is underway. For tickets, call Cress at 717-7576 and club members will also be selling. Last year the ice went out at the Sebec Lake location on April 18 at 3 p.m.
Art contest Chair Wendy Hutchins announced the contest will be March 26 at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. She has contacted the schools and Barb Austin will contact the area Kiwanis clubs who donate to the prize monies. Suzette East will be judging again this year.
Cress announced the District Art Contest will be held April 8 in Newport. Carol Kilpatrick reported that the scholarship forms are available, and Cress said spring convention will be May 11-12 at Hollywood Slots in Bangor.
Jones read correspondence from the Spruce Run-Womancare Alliance asking for a donation. A motion was made and passed to put a decision on hold until spring.
McCormick read an article about Martha Rollins from The Clarion, the Maine Education Association-Retired newsletter. Rollins is an associate member of the GFWC/Miosac Club and she taught for several years.
Members were asked to bring something to share. ones started the program with a Pinocchio doll. Some members brought old pictures of their families, handwork, an old Bible, handwork retrieved from a fire, a special wall hanging, a braided rug in progress and a wedding ring quilt made by hand.
Members brought personal care products to be donated to the veterans home in Bangor as well as the valentines they had made since the last meeting. McCormick and Leona Dow took the items to the home. Included were eight fleece lap robes McCormick made. She also displayed three more quilts for Project Linus,
Following the meeting delicious refreshments were served by Quiet and Barb Austin on a beautiful Valentine’s Day-decorated table.
